The 2013 growing season’s normal temperatures and lack of major inclement weather led to a nicely paced and well-timed harvest. Warm days paired with cool nights made for excellent growing conditions, allowing for generous yields of grapes across the board.
A portion of the Zinfandel grapes were harvested from the Lodi region surrounding the winery, one of the first recognized winegrowing appellations in California. Tempered by cool breezes from the San
Joaquin Delta, sunny days here help develop ample fruitiness in Zinfandel grapes. The light and highly organic sandy clay loam soils of the region contribute to the fruit-forward yet delicate character of
this wine. Grapes harvested from Central and North Valley AVAs help complement the Lodi fruit and complete the flavor profile of the 2013 White Zinfandel.
We crafted a portion of this wine using a French technique called saignée (sen-yay), which gives the wine its appealing pastel color and bright berry fruit flavors. Saignée means “to bleed” and they have bled off colors, aromas, and flavors from the skins of the lightly crushed red grapes without extracting dark color or tannins. The free-run juice was then cold fermented to highlight the fresh fruit personality. The White Zinfandel’s fresh, lively character is best enjoyed within a year or two of the vintage.
This 2013 White Zinfandel is bright and crisp, making it an ideal wine to enjoy on a warm afternoon. With hints of citrus and juicy red fruit from a propriety blend of grape varieties, the wine’s fruity aromas and flavors come alive through watermelon and floral notes.
Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for Robert Mondavi Winery. This first-growth vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Mr. Mondavi crafted his signature wine, Fumé Blanc.
Along with To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery sources grapes from some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards, including Stag’s Leap (Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc) and Carneros (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).
Mr. Mondavi believed that wines should reflect their origins, that they are the product of the soil, the climate, and the careful stewardship of those precious resources. He also believed in combining the newest techniques and technology with time-honored winemaking traditions.
