Robert Mondavi Woodbridge Sweet Red
|Region||California, United States|
|Brand||Robert Mondavi Winery|
Above-average rainfall in the California led to a slow start going into the 2011 growing season. However, springtime growth was only slightly behind the historical average. Continuing into summer and fall, mild weather resulted in smaller-than-normal cluster weights and below-average yields, making the fruit flavors more concentrated and intense.
Grapes for this Sweet Red blend were sourced from premium California vineyards, grown with ample sunshine during warm days, and tempered by cool evening breezes to develop the grapes’ fruitiness. Grapes harvested from the Central Coast and North and South Valley AVAs allowed crisp fruit flavors and a nice amount of natural acidity to shine through in this wine.
The Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Sweet Red was crafted using a French technique called saignee (sen-yay), giving the wine its appealing color and bright berry fruit flavors. Saignee means “to bleed”, and we bled off colors, aromas, and flavors from the skins of the lightly crushed red grapes. The free-run juice was then cold-fermented in stainless steel, and the various grape varieties were finally blended to create a fresh, lively wine with a sweet, fruity personality.
Varietal composition: a blend of highlighted by Syrah and Merlot and a mix of proprietary sweet white grapes.
Total acid: 0.68g/100ml
Residual sugar: 5.5%
This 2011 Sweet Red blend is a fun and lively addition to any gathering that involves wine. Sweet summer strawberries and juicy watermelon come alive in the wine’s aromas and flavors.
Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for Robert Mondavi Winery. This first-growth vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Mr. Mondavi crafted his signature wine, Fumé Blanc.
Along with To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery sources grapes from some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards, including Stag’s Leap (Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc) and Carneros (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).
Mr. Mondavi believed that wines should reflect their origins, that they are the product of the soil, the climate, and the careful stewardship of those precious resources. He also believed in combining the newest techniques and technology with time-honored winemaking traditions.
